CANYON MURAL ART  A Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone Painting

Carl Tolpo, artist ( 1901-1976)  Yellowstone Painter

Carl Tolpo found inspiration in travel west and by 1931 was painting extensively on location in the Yellowstone National Park region of Wyoming - particularly the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. Park Rangers soon named his favorite spot to paint “Tolpo Point” and in the 1970's, the Yellowstone painter was there at the easle on a final trip to complete a colossal work, a Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone painting.

Carl Tolpo painted entirely on location -in sections - oil on panels at the canyon rim.

1974

And at last-in sections- he assembled the colossal canyon mural art.

Carl Tolpo heeded such old

masters as Leonardo and Durër with use of the grid as an artist’s tool to break down space into smaller units to merge anew as an integrated image.  (Digital images form by grids of colored squares now.) Thomas Moran inspired the huge scale. Tolpo painted 100 years later, en plein air, rapted by nature and wildlife at Yellowstone National Park.

“ The eternal forces...display,

in repose, their indubitable supremacy over all things material...

a grand disposition of noble serenity - the serenity of
